Reply-Handler: 'We Went With Someone Else'

They picked someone else. The reflex is to say 'thanks anyway' and move on. That's a wasted opportunity. Roughly one in four 'we went with someone else' jobs go badly mid-project — the cheap guy disappears, the work isn't right, something goes wrong. When that happens, the customer is panicked and looking for anyone to fix it. Who do they call?

The door-keeper
Totally respect that — thank you for letting me know. If anything comes up during the work or after, please don't hesitate to call us. We'll be here. And if you'd ever consider us for [adjacent service or future project], we'd love the chance.

Why it works

  • You're gracious. You don't pressure. You don't sulk.
  • You explicitly invite them back — 'please call us if anything comes up' — which plants the seed for the rescue call.
  • You leave a door open for future jobs and for referrals. They remember how you handled the loss.

Save the lead's contact in your CRM with a tag like 'lost — keep warm'. Reach out 60 days later with a Day 30-style message (next lesson). That's where the rescue jobs come from.
