Level 1 — The Simple Ask (Free & Powerful)
The most powerful referral system in the world costs nothing and takes 10 seconds. It's just asking. Most service businesses never do it. The ones that do — consistently — see referrals increase by 30–50% within 90 days.
When to Ask — Timing Is Everything
The best moment to ask for a referral is immediately after the customer expresses satisfaction — when the dopamine of a solved problem is at its peak. Never ask before the job is done or when there's any outstanding issue.
- When they say "This looks great!" — peak satisfaction. The single best moment.
- Right after the job completion walkthrough — they can see the difference.
- Within 1 hour of leaving via SMS — the experience is fresh.
- After they leave a 5-star review — following up feels logical.
- With the invoice/receipt — a quiet, non-pressuring ask on paper.
The Ask Scripts — Word for Word
In Person (right after job completion)
"I'm really glad everything came out well. We love working with customers like you — and honestly, most of our best new customers come from referrals. If you ever know someone who needs [your service], please think of us. Just sending them our number means the world to a small business like ours." Then: hand them a referral card or say: "I'll text you our contact info so you can forward it any time."
SMS Script (send within 1 hour of job)
"Hi [Name], so glad everything looks great! One quick thing — if you ever know someone who needs [service], we'd love if you passed our number along. Here's our contact card so you can share it easily: [vCard link] Thanks again — you were a pleasure to work with! — [Your Name]"
Email Version (great for commercial clients)
Subject: Thank you — and a small favour "Hi [Name], Thank you for trusting us with [the job]. We really enjoyed working with you. If you know anyone — a neighbor, colleague, or friend — who could use our [service], we'd be so grateful for an introduction. We work hard to make every referral proud they sent us. Feel free to share our contact info: [website] | [phone] Thanks again, [Your Name]"
The ask doesn't have to be awkward. If you did good work, asking for a referral is giving the customer an easy way to help someone they care about. It's a service, not a sales pitch.
