Referral Programs That Actually Work

Following Up With Referrers — Seasonal Campaigns

A referral program isn't a one-time ask. The most powerful version is an ongoing relationship with past customers — staying in touch with relevant, timely offers they'll genuinely want to share. This is where the referral program becomes a marketing channel, not just a thank-you gesture.

The 4-Touch Annual Calendar

Four well-timed follow-ups per year is all it takes to stay top of mind without being annoying. Each touch is useful to the customer, includes a seasonal offer, and gives them something to share with a friend.

  • Touch 1 — Spring (March/April): "Spring [service] check — book before [date] and save 10%." Hook: "Share this with a neighbor and you both save 10%."
  • Touch 2 — Summer (June/July): "Summer's busy — lock in your [service] slot before we fill up." Hook: "Forward this — they'll get $20 off their first visit."
  • Touch 3 — Fall (September/October): "Get ready for [season] — [seasonal offer]." Hook: "Refer a friend before [date] and get a $25 gift card — just in time for the holidays."
  • Touch 4 — Year End (December/January): "Thank you for your business this year — here's a little something from us" (discount or free add-on). Loyalty thank-you that builds goodwill for next year's referrals.

Keeping It Simple — No CRM Required

  • Keep a running Google Sheet or Notes list of past customer names and phone numbers.
  • Each quarter, spend 30 minutes sending the seasonal text to everyone on the list.
  • Use your phone's Scheduled Send (iPhone Messages or Android equivalents) to prepare messages in advance.
  • As the list grows, consider a free tool like SimpleTexting or EZTexting for batch sending.
