Reviews as AI Training Data
Reviews are not just social proof for humans — they are one of the richest sources of real-world language about your business that AI gets trained on. Every review is a sentence or paragraph that says: this business did [specific service] in [city] and the customer felt [outcome].
AI reads that. AI learns from that. Businesses with 200 keyword-rich reviews in a specific city are almost impossible to beat on AI-driven recommendations for that city and that service.
What Makes a Review Useful for AI Visibility
Not all reviews are equal. A review that says 'Great! 5 stars!' tells AI almost nothing. A review that says 'Mike's Plumbing fixed our burst pipe in North Austin on a Saturday morning, quick and professional' is a citation. It contains: business name, specific service, specific location, timing, and quality signal.
Weak (low AI value): "Great service! Very happy." → Strong (high AI value): "Jake from Jake's Electric came out to our home in Riverside to install a new panel. On time, priced fairly, explained everything. Best electrician we've used in years."
How to Get Better Reviews — Without Being Pushy
The key is to make it easy and to give customers a gentle guide. You're not telling them what to say — you're reminding them what they actually experienced.
Send a review request text within 24 hours
The sooner after the job, the more they remember the details — and the more specific (and AI-useful) their review will be.
Give them a gentle nudge in the message
Say something like: 'If you have a moment, we'd love a Google review — feel free to mention what we worked on and where you're located. It really helps other local families find us.' This naturally prompts them to include location and service type.
Use a vCard or QR code on-site
If you're at a job and the customer is happy, show them your QR code with the Google review link. Capture the moment while enthusiasm is high. Include a QR code on your invoice or job completion sheet too.
Write a friendly, 2-sentence text message I can send to a customer asking for a Google review. Business: [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] Service performed: [SERVICE] Customer's neighborhood/city: [LOCATION] The text should: - Sound like a real person, not a corporate auto-message - Gently encourage them to mention the service and location in their review - Include a placeholder for the review link - Stay under 320 characters
The Volume Goal
Aim for 2–4 new Google reviews per month. That's one happy customer per week. Over a year, that's 24–48 keyword-rich reviews. After 18 months, your review profile is nearly impossible for a competitor to match.
